UW meet-up day !

UW, aka the Ubuntu-Women project is a group of women (and men) who encourage women to contribute and volunteer in the Ubuntu-Linux community. If you have always wanted to actually contribute something to the free software community but never knew where to start or how to get involved in an existing project, then ask the UW team, who will gladly assist you with more information about our community, its projects and other cool stuff about Ubuntu.

They are having an open “meet-up day” to be held on Thursday, January 11, 2007 on IRC at the #ubuntu-women channel on irc.freenode.net. Be there to exchange ideas with other like-minded technically inclined women in the Ubuntu community. Please note that this event is not restricted on the basis of gender and everyone is welcome to join us.

Currently there are two scheduled sessions to try to cover various timezones and Elizabeth Bevilacqua is going to conduct a course : an introduction to IRC, for newer folks interested in learning to use Internet Relay Chat.

Check your timezones at the Ubuntu mailing list archives or at the Ubuntuforums thread where you can discuss or post any comments.

LPI Ubuntu Certification Training

Canonical Ltd., the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu, today announced it has partnered with LynuxTraining Sàrl to develop the first dedicated Ubuntu training courses for the 'Ubuntu Certified Professional' status. UCP is a training certification based on the LPI level 1 certification.

Starting from the first quarter of 2007 system administrators will be able to participate in two five day courses available via a global network of partners with the Linux Professional Institute. These classes are the first in a series of classroom-based e-learning courses to aide system administrators in becoming Ubuntu Certified Professionals based on the LPI Level 1 certification.

Canonical continues to see an increasing demand for an IT certification which proves an individual's Ubuntu skills. We are delighted to be working with LynuxTraining to deliver Ubuntu Certified Professional status to Systems Administrators within the enterprise environment. — Jane Silber, Canonical CEO

Detailed information concerning the certifications can be found on the Ubuntu website by visiting http://www.ubuntu.com/partners/certification/pro

The week takes place between Mon 27th Nov and Sat 2nd Dec 2006.

The week of events includes sessions from some of the most well respected members of the Ubuntu community, on a number of different subjects, including:

  • The Ubuntu Community
  • Kubuntu
  • MOTU
  • The Documentation Team
  • Edubuntu
  • Translating applications with Rosetta
  • The Bug Squad
  • Ubuntu packaging
  • Becoming an Ubuntu member
  • Launchpad

  • Ubuntu Ports
  • Q + A session with Mark Shuttleworth

The full timetable is available here, and everyone is welcome. All sessions take place in #ubuntu-classroom on irc.freenode.net.

In addition to the formal events, Friday 1st Dec (the Friday in the Ubuntu Open Week) is a freshers day in which new community members and those who want to get involved in the community can come along, ask their questions and get plenty of help. This will take place in #ubuntu-freshers on irc.freenode.net. Existing community members are invited to help these new folks out.

So, there is no excuse for not coming along, getting involved and being part of the ever growing, ever awesome Ubuntu phenomenon!
