Holy Fork Ubuntu Man

Our very own Mark Shuttleworth posed in front of a Google tree during a recent interview with the chaps over at The Register. Mark answered questions covering everything from Oracle, Red Hat, and Novell to um, Microsoft? The interview is fun, to the point and very entertaining. It is cool to see Ubuntu's top dog, aka Ubuntu Man, have some fun with The Register.

So how does Mark feel about recent decisions and news surrounding Oracle?

“I think it's great that Oracle has entered the Linux market, but the specific tactic they have chosen is going to be very impractical,”

One of many quotes by Mark, he provides a very detailed incite to the current events happening in the Linux community, post Microsoft/Novell. When asked about Novell and Microsoft, Mark doesn't hold back as he lays it all out on the line, letting you know exactly how he feels.

“I am sure that Novell just got paid $200m to be on that stage, and Microsoft is going to expect a return on their investment. And not from Novell.”

Now, the entire article isn't concerning the recent “what the forks” in the Linux community, as it also provides some very encouraging news concerning the future of Ubuntu and Sun Microsystems.

“Sun Microsystems helped add to the Ubuntu good cheer by saying the OS has been certified to run on some of its Opteron-based servers. As of today, customers can Ubuntize their X4100 and X4200 Sun Fire systems and Ultra 20 and 40 workstations. Eventually, Sun plans to offer Ubuntu across its whole x86 family.”

Head on over to The Register and read the entire article, Oracle must eat Red Hat or fork, says Ubuntu man.

Developer Summit – you can contribute!

The Ubuntu Developer Summit has just kicked off in Mountain View, and the discussions about Feisty are rolling on. Launchpad in October: Bazaar and Mirror additions

Christian Robottom Reis, who heads up the Launchpad team has been busy over the weekend and prepared the Launchpad report for the start of October.

Launchpad is the central focal point for many K/Ubuntu activities, providing the bug tracking system known as Malone, a complete specification management system and the Rosetta web-based translation interface. Many developers spend several hours per day working with the bugtracker and when the Developer Summit: Mountain View begins this weekend in Californa, the specification system will receive an equal workout.

Inside this latest Launchpad report, you will find an excellent introduction and detailed description of that specification management system.

If you’re a fan of Bazaar version control you will get the low-down on the new way to work with Bazaar branches using Launchpad. There’s further coverage of the Bazaar/Launchpad integration work from James Henstridge’s.

As previously covered in the Ubuntu Weekly News, Launchpad has gained mirror management interface. This improved system is for Ubuntu mirror administrators to manage and announce their FTP servers to the Ubuntu community. There’s no overall mirror page but you can access the individual pages for CD, archive mirrors, or add a new one.

Launchpad also gained many enhancements to the bug tracking system, particularly in the handling for coping with bug report duplicates, where the same, or similar issue has been reported multiple times.

The full report for the first two weeks of October, including a detailed changlog and much extra information on all Launchpad improvements or changes is available in the mailing list archives. Head over and grab the complete Launchpad News from the Launchpad Users’ mailing list.

Weekly News #20: Edgy coverage and a request to mirror admins

The latest issue of the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter has now arrived, covering 2005 October 22nd – 28th.
The main topic for this 20th issue has been the arrival of the latest Ubuntu 6.10 release, (“Edgy Eft”).

Of course, there has been plenty more happening than just the news of the release, with a full of set other topics included in the newsletter:

  • Ubuntu 6.10 released
  • Firefox 2.0 released, 6.10 first to ship with it
  • Topics chosen for Mountain View
  • Last Edgy changes
  • Launchpad news
  • In the press
  • Security updates
  • Bug stats

One of the things that makes it possible to keep Ubuntu download-speeds high, are the global networks of “mirrors”, each one providing a quick, local way of getting the programs that make up Ubuntu. Thanks to the number of mirrors, frequently the person downloading and their nearest mirror end up being in the same country.

If you’re one of those tireless mirror administrators donating bandwidth to keep speeds high, then there is a piece just for you. The Launchpad section in this weeks issue includes a special request to Ubuntu mirror administrators to check their details in the CD and archive mirror listings. Please ensure that they are listed (and if you’re not listed, register now!).

You can head over now and catch the full Ubuntu Weekly News #20 in one easy page.
