Call for nominations for the Local Communities Council

The Local Communities (LoCo) Council has been vacant for some time and has not been restaffed due to a vacant Community Council. Since the Community Council has now been newly elected, a nomination for the LoCo Council is now being announced.

The LoCo Council is a board of people who are in charge of empowering and helping out LoCo Teams worldwide. Their members have two-year terms, and we have seven open seats at the Council. The eligibility requirements are:

– Be an Ubuntu Member
– Be available during typical meeting hours [see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoCouncil/Agenda]
– Insight into the culture(s) and typical activities of LoCo teams is a plus.

The LoCo Council usually meets once a month in IRC and has discussions on its mailing list. They are current Ubuntu Members with a proven track record of activity in the community. They have shown themselves over time to be able to work well with others and display the positive aspects of the Ubuntu Code of Conduct. They should be people who can judge contribution quality without emotion while engaging in an interview/discussion that communicates interest, a welcoming atmosphere, and which is marked by humanity, gentleness, and kindness.

If this sounds like you or a person you know, please send your nominations to community-council at lists.ubuntu.com.

Please include the name, Launchpad ID, and Ubuntu Wiki page for whom you are nominating, as well as a few lines about the nominee, so the Community Council can get an idea of why you/they would like to join the Council and why you/they would like to be considered. If you nominate someone else, please make sure that they are aware of their nomination.

The Community Council welcomes nominations from all over the world and from any LoCo Team, verified or not. Nominees do not need to be Team Contacts or Team Leads. However, they need people active on their teams and naturally must be current Ubuntu Members.

Nominations are now open and will close on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at 23:59 UTC. After that, the Community Council will review the submissions and appoint the new LoCo Council members.

Please do not hesitate to share this post with anyone you think deserves to be on the LoCo Council.

Announcing the new Ubuntu Community Council

Thanks to all the Ubuntu Members that voted in the election, I am proud to announce our new Ubuntu Community Council!

Ubuntu 20.10 (Groovy Gorilla) released

Codenamed “Groovy Gorilla”, 20.10 continues Ubuntu’s proud tradition of integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution. The team has been hard at work through this cycle, introducing new features and fixing bugs.

The Ubuntu kernel has been updated to the 5.8 based Linux kernel, and our default toolchain has moved to gcc 10 with glibc 2.32. Additionally, there is now a desktop variant of the Raspberry Pi image for Raspberry Pi 4 4GB and 8GB.

Ubuntu Desktop 20.10 introduces GNOME 3.38, the fastest release yet with significant performance improvements delivering a more responsive experience. Additionally, the desktop installer includes the ability to connect to Active Directory domains.

Ubuntu Server 20.10 integrates recent innovations from key virtualization and infrastructure projects like QEMU 5.0, libvirt 6.6 and OpenStack Victoria. Ubuntu Server now ships Telegraf, the metrics collecting agent that together with Prometheus and Grafana form the basis of a strong and reliable logging, monitoring and alerting solution that can be deployed on Ubuntu systems.

The newest Ubuntu Budgie, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Studio, and Xubuntu are also being released today. More details can be found for these at their individual release notes under the Official Flavours section:

Maintenance updates will be provided for 9 months for all flavours releasing with 20.10.
