Ubuntu Developer Summit Sevilla: The video

From Sunday to Friday this week, the UDS Sevilla (Ubuntu Developer Summit) is taking place in southern Spain. Organised with the help of the team behind Guadalinex and the regional government, the summit brings together many K/Ubuntu developers to outline what the next release of Ubuntu will contain.

Under the disguise of testing out video-editing in Ubuntu, a 3 minute has been shot to give people an idea of the event. For those who have never been, Ubuntu Developer Summits are a bit of a black box, an unknown entity. The music for the video is some free/libre music from Ubuntu community leader Jono Bacon; a recording of his song Voices of Freedom.

Go mobile !

Imagine Ubuntu running on your Internet-enabled mobile device… How cool is that !?

To make this dream a reality, Ubuntu plans to extend their software development to handheld Internet-enabled devices in partnership with Intel, thereby enabling us to change the way we communicate and collaborate.

Targeting an initial release with the next version of Ubuntu in October 2007, the Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded project will target “mobile Internet devices” (MIDs), along the lines of Nokia's N800 web tablet. This was announced recently on the developer's mailing list by Matt Zimmermann, CTO of Ubuntu.

Since these devices place new demands on open source software and require innovative graphical interfaces, improved power management and better responsiveness, Ubuntu developers are brainstorming on ideas at the ongoing developer summit at Sevilla (Spain).

D-Link LiveDVD features Kubuntu

In a recent story published by Heise Online, D-Link is publishing a LiveDVD featuring the Kubuntu GNU/Linux operating system. This DVD features a router development environment for the HorstBox Professional VoIP router (page available in German only). The HorstBox Professional contains a WLAN router with ADSL modem as well as a system that runs the Asterisk telephone system.

According to D-Link open source is an important component of its product strategy. “That a complete development environment would be made available was already apparent when HorstBox Professional was still in its conception phase. The reason for this is obvious: The requirements that future-proof systems capable of flexibly responding to the desires of customers need to meet are continuing to grow. In this way we can meet these requirements in an optimal fashion,” Horst Toddenroth, head of the Advanced Products and Solutions Department at D-Link Central Europe, said.

Dell Team Up With Canonical

As a testament to Ubuntu's growing mainstream success, Canonical and Dell this week announced that they were working together to offer Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) on select desktops and notebooks. The deal was struck in response to an overwhelming number of requests made on the Dell IdeaStorm website for Ubuntu to be bundled with Dell systems.

Mark Shuttleworth said of the deal in a video interview posted on the Dell blog, “It's very exciting to see this free software community actually expressing itself; and it's equally exciting to see a very large company listening to that freedom of expression”.

According to Dell, notebooks and desktops preloaded with Ubuntu will be available in the USA in the next few weeks.
