Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS released

The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce the release of Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS (Long-Term Support) for its Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core products, as well as other flavours of Ubuntu with long-term support.

As with 12.04.3, 12.04.4 contains an updated kernel and X stack for new installations on x86 architectures.

As usual, this point release includes many updates, and updated installation media has been provided so that fewer updates will need to be downloaded after installation. These include security updates and corrections for other high-impact bugs, with a focus on maintaining stability and compatibility with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

Kubuntu 12.04.4 LTS, Edubuntu 12.04.4 LTS, Xubuntu 12.04.4 LTS, Mythbuntu 12.04.4 LTS, and Ubuntu Studio 12.04.4 LTS are also now available. For some of these, more details can be found in their announcements:

Users of Ubuntu 10.04 will be offered an automatic upgrade to 12.04.4 via Update Manager. For further information about upgrading, see:

Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) End of Life reached on January 27 2014

This is a follow-up to the End of Life warning sent last month to confirm that as of today (Jan 27, 2014), Ubuntu 13.04 is no longer supported. No more package updates will be accepted to 13.04, and it will be archived to old-releases.ubuntu.com in the coming weeks.

The original End of Life warning follows, with upgrade instructions:

Ubuntu announced its 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) release almost 9 months ago, on April 25, 2013. This was the first release with our new 9 month support cycle and, as such, the support period is now nearing its end and Ubuntu 13.04 will reach end of life on Monday, January 27th. At that time, Ubuntu Security Notices will no longer include information or updated packages for Ubuntu 13.04.

The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 13.04 is via Ubuntu 13.10. Instructions and caveats for the upgrade may be found at:

Ubuntu 13.10 continues to be actively supported with security updates and select high-impact bug fixes. Announcements of security updates for Ubuntu releases are sent to the ubuntu-security-announce mailing list, information about which may be found at:

Trusty Alpha 2 Available for Testing

The second Alpha of Trusty Tahr (to become 14.04 LTS) has now been released for testers and early adopters.

This alpha features images for Edubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu Kylin, Xubuntu and Ubuntu Cloud images.

These are not to be used as stable systems but please do test for bugs to report. Always ensure your system is up to date before reporting bugs.

Edubuntu

Edubuntu is the educational flavour of Ubuntu. It’s very similar to stock Ubuntu but integrates a lot of educational software, supports thin clients (LTSP) and offers an optional GNOME lashback desktop as an alternative to Unity.

Kubuntu

Kubuntu is the KDE based flavour of Ubuntu. It uses the Plasma desktop and includes a wide selection of tools from the KDE project. In this LTS cycle the Kubuntu team are working on stabalising and bug fixing.
