This is a follow-up to the End of Life warning sent last month to
confirm that as of today (May 9, 2013), Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop is no
longer supported. This announcement is for the desktop product only,
Ubuntu 10.04 Server is still supported for another two years.
The original End of Life warning follows, with upgrade instructions:
Ubuntu announced its 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) release almost 3 years ago,
on April 29, 2010. As with the earlier LTS releases, Ubuntu committed
to ongoing security and critical fixes for a period of 3 years on the
desktop. The support period is now nearing its end and Ubuntu 10.04
Desktop will reach end of life on Thursday, May 9th. At that time,
Ubuntu Security Notices will no longer include information or updated
packages for Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop. Ubuntu 10.04 Server continues to
be supported for another 2 years.
The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 10.04 is via Ubuntu 12.04.
Instructions and caveats for the upgrade may be found at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PreciseUpgrades. Ubuntu 12.04
continues to be actively supported with security updates and
select high-impact bug fixes. All announcements of official security
updates for Ubuntu releases are sent to the ubuntu-security-announce
mailing list, information about which may be found at
https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-security-announce.
Since its launch in October 2004 Ubuntu has become one of the most
highly regarded Linux distributions with millions of users in homes,
schools, businesses and governments around the world. Ubuntu is Open
Source software, costs nothing to download, and users are free to
customise or alter their software in order to meet their needs.

Sad to see that Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop will be fading away. This is probably the best desktop that Canonical ever released.
I have 13.04 loaded on a brand new laptop and can honestly say that it doesn’t hold a candle to 10.04. Way too many bugs and issues. Even my kids won’t use it. With the flood of evermore iApps and Android apps that pretty much says it all. We have Apple and Asus Android puters in the house but they won’t touch my two notebooks with Unity. They hate it.
So…..goodbye to the last great desktop, Ubuntu 10.04. You will be missed greatly.

I’ve played with many ubuntu releases, and other linux distros. Personally, I feel ubuntu is definitely the best out of box experience, but the unity desktop and gnomes changes have definitely ruined the experience. I’ve gotten past with rigging up cinnamon on ubuntu 12.10 and now 13.04 to look like the old gnome, but in the end I’m going to be going back to 10.04. Also, I am looking for a distribution to fork, to a stable, beautiful and powerful distro, and Ubuntu is obviously the best base. Maybe 10.04 will be my forking platform.

Is there enough interest to keep Ubuntu 10.04 LTS updated? We should backport the security patches etc. Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is not going anywhere. I just hope that there will be some support to the end users.

I do not think so. The end of life date was established even before release, and now developers are focusing on the stable releases. You can try with those if you like.

That was the best distro ever…
I fell in love with that gnome, it was so fast and light…

I still using 10.04 since the first betas, definitely was the best release. I tried the next releases until 13.10 and I have the same feeling, buggy, heavy and with hard to customize.
I’m going to install it in another computer but same 10.04 LTS.

I’m still using 10.04 because the kernel in 12.04 would not boot on my laptop. Lots of ACPI errors due to a buggy BIOS, seems that a lot of important work arounds were dropped in newer kernels.

I like Ubuntu 10.04. I have found it to be the best OS of any thing I have used and it will run an any of the old computers I have.
I am sad that it is not supported as nothing can come any were near it as being easy to use or as use full.
It is hard to say cheers.

I’m sorry, but 3 to 5 years is *NOT* “long-term” support. I have projects from 2008 that still need to be supported and kept up to date to this day that require Ubuntu 8 & 10.
